International Criminal Court Approves Palestine to Join April 1

Hopes of a long-term solution for peace between Palestinians and Israelis seemed more distant last week after Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that the so-called “State of Palestine” would join the International Criminal Court (ICC) on April 1. The application submitted by Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas accepted the jurisdiction of the ICC over actions within the disputed territories extending back to June 13, 2014—a day after the Hamas abduction and murder of three Israeli teens, thereby averting prosecution for this war crime under the Rome Statute.

The Palestinian ambassador to the submitted a request this Friday to join 22 international treaties including the International Criminal Court, despite a failed bid for Palestinian statehood in the UN Security two days prior. The Palestinian Authority (PA) has been eligible to apply to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court at the Hague since November 2012, when the UN General Assembly agreed to categorize it as a "nonmember observer state."

In 2010, Kay Wilson, a Jewish tour guide, was one of two women bound up with shoe laces and attacked with a serrated knife in the forest near Jerusalem by local Arabs. This traumatic experience did not stop Wilson, however, from taking into her home 17-year old Nazareth resident Mohammad Zoabi after receiving death threats for his support of Israel during Operation Protective Edge.

The Palestinian Authority has submitted a draft of a UN Security Council resolution through member nation Jordan, setting a one-year deadline for reaching a peace deal with Israel, and the end of 2017 as the deadline for total Israeli withdrawal from Judea and Samaria, Israel's ancient heartland, which includes east Jerusalem. The move comes amid growing international pressure to recognize a Palestinian statehood, with a series of European parliaments asking their governments to recognize a Palestinian state.
