Matot-Masei: Settlement, Exile, and Restoration for Israel

A Jordanian boy leads his flock. Although the Israelites first settled on the east side of the Jordan, in the 20th century, that land was allocated to the creation of an entirely new country called Transjordan (Jordan) by the League of Nations.

As the tribes of Israel prepare to end their wilderness wanderings and enter the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and half of Manasseh ask Moses for permission to settle east of the Jordan River instead of in their inheritance of Canaan. Moses, at first, misunderstands their motives and accuses them of causing division among the community and avoiding their responsibility to their fellow tribes.

Parasha Behaalotecha: Raising the Menorah, the Light of Purity

Golden-Menorah

This week's Scripture portion is named Behaalotecha, which means when you step up. It is called this because it begins with instructions as to how the Menorah (lampstand) is to be set up in the Tabernacle. A related word is aliyah (עליה) — the Hebrew word for immigrating to the Land of Israel. It can also be defined as the act of going up.
