Parasha Vayelech (And He Went): Finding Courage During Times of Transition

This week’s Shabbat occurs during a very special 10-day period between Rosh HaShanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) called both Yamim Nora’im (Days of Awe) and Aseret Y'may Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance). The Days of Awe is traditionally the period to get right with God and our fellow man through repentance and asking forgiveness. This Shabbat, therefore, which falls between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, is the first of the Jewish new year. It's called Shabbat Shuvah or Sabbath of Return since the Haftarah reading begins with the exhortation “Shuvah Yisrael—Return O Israel.”

This covenant promised that God would establish Israel as His own people and that He would be their God. It included everyone standing before God—from the greatest to the least—the heads of tribes, elders, officers, the men and women, the little ones, and the strangers (Deuteronomy 29:10–11)—from that day forward for all time.

God instructs Israel to bring the first-ripened fruits (bikkurim) to the Temple in Jerusalem once the Israelites had finally entered the Land He promised to them. After they had settled in the Land and cultivated it, they were to present this offering to the Levites (Deuteronomy 26:2-4). In giving this ‘firstfruits offering,’ which included wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates, the Israelites were offering thanksgiving to God for all the amazing things He had done for them.

This week’s Parasha (Torah portion) begins with God’s expectations that we treat people, including female captives of war, with kindness, respect, and human decency. For instance, if an Israelite soldier saw a beautiful woman among those taken captive during battle, and desired her for a wife, he was first required to allow her to grieve for a full month the bitterness of her captivity. Even if he didn’t want her afterward, he couldn’t sell her or treat her as a slave (Deuteronomy 21:10–14).
