Israeli authorities are working to cool the red hot climate in Israel following the brutal murders of three Jewish teens, Naftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar, both 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19, and one Palestinian teen, Muhammad Abu Khdair, 17, whose body was found July 2. Palestinian residents reported seeing Abu Khdair forced into a vehicle outside a supermarket in the Shuafat section of Jerusalem on Wednesday. His body was found just hours after the abduction in the Jerusalem Forest. It was charred and showed signs of violence. Post-mortem reports suggest the lad was burned alive. Just one day before, the Jewish teens had been laid to rest, their deaths bringing the nation to its knees in united grief and mourning. Six Jewish Israelis were arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Abu Khadair on Sunday.

Israeli Embassy in Cameroon Helps Vaccinate 10,000 Refugee Children

Using funds that were originally set aside for an Israeli Independence Day reception, the Israeli Embassy in Cameroon established a five-day vaccination program from June 8 to 12 that treated over 10,000 refugee children. During the clinic, 5,000 were vaccinated against polio and 5,000 others against measles. The Embassy worked together with the Cameroon Pediatric Association to set up a health clinic in the Gado Refugee Camp, located near Garoua Boulai in eastern Cameroon.

Southern Israel was hit Wednesday with the second rocket attack from the Gaza Strip since Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas installed the new Fatah-Hamas unity government on June 2. The United States denounced the attack as “unprovoked aggression,” although it said it would still work with the new government. “We condemn all rocket fire from Gaza. It is unprovoked aggression against civilian targets and is totally unacceptable,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, noting that there were no Hamas members in the new Palestinian government.

Israel and EU Sign Scientific Cooperation Agreement

On Sunday Israel and the European Union signed the Horizon 2020 agreement that gives Israel access to the EU’s largest ever research and development program. The agreement allows Israel to participate and benefit the same as any other member state. Israel, the first and only non-member state to have access to the fund, devotes 4 % of its GDP to research and development in the fields of science, medicine, technology and the environment. It has been working with the EU since 1996, but the present agreement will allow for a more active involvement.

Abbas and Peres Pray for Peace on the Vatican Lawn

In an unprecedented interfaith prayer summit on a lawn of the Vatican, Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met yesterday to pray for peace in the Middle East. Before the prayer summit, Peres stated, “I have come to the Vatican from the State of Israel together with the representatives of the main monotheistic religions in Israel for an extraordinary event for peace. This spiritual call is very important and influential, since the conflict [in the Middle East] is one that is of both a political and a religious nature.”
