This Shabbat is also the first Sabbath (day of rest) in the Hebrew month of Nisan, which God ordained as the first month of the Biblical calendar. Biblically speaking, then, we are in a new year! God made Nisan the first month of the year because it was the month in which the Jewish people were freed from slavery in Egypt and became a nation. Nisan is regarded today as the start of the ecclesiastical new year, but the first of Tishri, which is the seventh month, is regarded as the start of the civil year.

Moses did only according to the heavenly pattern that was shown to him on the mountain. Likewise, we need to make sure that our works are what our Father is asking us to do, the way He is asking us to do it, and that we are not just doing our own thing.

Ninth Annual Israel Apartheid Week Promotes Anti-Israel Propaganda‏

During South Africa's apartheid era, even beaches were segregated. Signs like the one above kept non-whites out of white-only areas, such as this Durban beach. This was entirely legal under apartheid-era laws. This kind of segregation is illegal in Israel. Last week, an international crusade against Israel began in Europe called the Ninth Annual Israel Apartheid Week (IAW). The aim of IAW is to manufacture an international perception of Israel as an “apartheid” state much as South Africa was prior to 1994.

God tells Moses that He has filled Bezalel with His Holy Spirit, wisdom, understanding and ingenuity for all manner of artistic workmanship so that the furnishings of the Tabernacle, the priests’ vestments, the anointing oil, and the incense could be created.

God wants to ensure that His people will remain in communion with Him, so He commands Moshe (Moses) to build the Sanctuary as a visible reminder that God dwells among them. He also tells Moses to ask the children of Israel to give an offering (terumah) towards the construction of the Sanctuary. Only those stirred in their hearts with a desire to participate in this holy work are to donate their material goods. No one is to give grudgingly or out of a sense of duty but out of love and gratitude towards God.

Parasha Tetzaveh (You Command): The Oil of Anointing

This week’s Parasha begins with the commandment to the children of Israel to bring the pure olive oil for the menorah in the Mishkan (Sanctuary), so the lamps in the Tent of Meeting could continually burn. Oil was also used in the priests’ ordination ceremony. Not only were the priests’ heads anointed with it, but they also presented to God a wave offering of unleavened bread prepared with oil.
