Hamas Prisoners Detail Hamas War Crimes and Planned Paraglider Attack

Hamas prisoners captured during Operation Protective Edge have admitted that Hamas has been raising up a paraglider team to attack Israel using rocket-propelled grenades, semi-automatic Kalashnikov rifles, and commando knives in a surprise move on Israeli forces near the Gaza Strip. Cell leader Mohammad Kadara, 28, confessed that the group had been sent to Malaysia by way of Cairo for training in paragliding. “The plan was to cross the border into Israel with a paraglider, reach an Israel Defense Force Post (IDF) post or settlement near the border, shoot at soldiers and civilians and kill as many Israelis as possible,” said Kadara.

After the abduction of United Nations' forces in Syria by rebel forces, the Syrian army and rebel Islamic forces continue to battle along Israel’s Golan border with Syria, placing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on high alert in the Golan Heights. The IDF also ordered farmers and civilians to vacate the Syria border area amid fierce fighting at the Quneitra crossing. On Friday, United States Secretary of State John Kerry called on the world to unite to defeat ISIS terror. “They have already demonstrated the ability to seize and hold more territory than any other terrorist organization, in a strategic region that borders Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey and is perilously close to Israel,” he wrote in a New York Times piece published Friday.

A recently released study by archaeologists who last year unearthed what was thought to be a Bronze Age royal wine cellar at the northern Galilee site of Tel Kabri confirmed that the bottles originally contained wine. “The presence of both tartaric and syringic acids in relative abundance as biomarkers indicates that all of these vessels originally held wine and that we may be confident in identifying this space as a wine storage room—that is to say, a wine cellar,” they said.

Parasha Shoftim (Judges): Exercising Judgment and the Knowledge of Good and Evil

This week’s Torah reading, called Judges (Shoftim in Hebrew), discusses the issue of justice according to a Biblical perspective. God commanded Moses to instruct the people of Israel to appoint shoftim (judges), a word derived from the word shafat, meaning to judge or to govern, and shotrim (officials or official books, and in modern Hebrew, police officers) to rule at the gates of the cities so that justice would prevail. These appointed leaders were expected to judge the people with fairness, equality and wisdom. They were forbidden from perverting justice in any way, such as showing favoritism or taking bribes.

At Risk Israeli Farmers Get Bomb Shelters and 500 Helping Hands

Many of the rockets that are fired from the Strip fall in agricultural fields. Until now, no farmer has been hurt, but the crops and fields have suffered. The government has committed to assisting those farmers who have suffered losses to crops and livestock. The director of Yofi Shel Yerakhot (Beautiful Vegetables) a cooperative of farmers in the Negev, said that their members as well as their workers (many of whom are Thai foreign workers), are committed to working the extra hours needed to assure a steady supply of vegetables to Israeli tables despite the crisis of Hamas bombing. Another group of foreign workers—500 Christian volunteers—will be arriving over the next three months to help farmers in Judea and Samaria. They have come as a part of a trip organized by the American Christian organization HaYovel (the Jubilee).

Elul leads up to the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe), a time of intensely focusing on repentance and forgiveness. The Days of Awe begin with Erev Rosh Hashanah on September 24 and end with the close of Yom Kippur on the night of October 4 (1–10 Tishrei).
