On Tuesday, Rachel Frenkel, the mother of Naftali, made a brief impassioned speech at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, imploring the United Nations and the world community to do everything possible to return the kidnapped boys to their families. Emphasizing that having a son taken is every mother’s nightmare, she said, “Twelve days ago, my son Naftali, and two other teenage students, Eyal Yifrah and Gilad Shaer—whose mothers are sitting behind me—were kidnapped on their way home from school. Since then, we’ve heard nothing—no news, no sign of life.”

Hamas Summer Camp Militarizes Young Palestinians

While many children in the West are looking forward to summer camp with hours spent playing, creating art, and learning skills such as swimming and canoeing, in the Gaza Strip, children are attending camps designed around robbing them of their childhood innocence. This summer, many of Gaza's children will be participating in about 70 Hamas camp sessions at which they will learn to shoot anti-tank weapons and Kalashnikov rifles, dismantle guns blindfolded and enact kidnappings of Israelis.

Southern Israel was hit Wednesday with the second rocket attack from the Gaza Strip since Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas installed the new Fatah-Hamas unity government on June 2. The United States denounced the attack as “unprovoked aggression,” although it said it would still work with the new government. “We condemn all rocket fire from Gaza. It is unprovoked aggression against civilian targets and is totally unacceptable,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, noting that there were no Hamas members in the new Palestinian government.

Israel and EU Sign Scientific Cooperation Agreement

On Sunday Israel and the European Union signed the Horizon 2020 agreement that gives Israel access to the EU’s largest ever research and development program. The agreement allows Israel to participate and benefit the same as any other member state. Israel, the first and only non-member state to have access to the fund, devotes 4 % of its GDP to research and development in the fields of science, medicine, technology and the environment. It has been working with the EU since 1996, but the present agreement will allow for a more active involvement.

Abbas and Peres Pray for Peace on the Vatican Lawn

In an unprecedented interfaith prayer summit on a lawn of the Vatican, Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met yesterday to pray for peace in the Middle East. Before the prayer summit, Peres stated, “I have come to the Vatican from the State of Israel together with the representatives of the main monotheistic religions in Israel for an extraordinary event for peace. This spiritual call is very important and influential, since the conflict [in the Middle East] is one that is of both a political and a religious nature.”

Australia Clarifies Stance on East Jerusalem

Australia has taken a courageous stand against an international trend and decided it will no longer refer to East Jerusalem as “occupied.” “The description of East Jerusalem as ‘occupied’ East Jerusalem is a term freighted with pejorative implications which is neither appropriate nor useful,” Attorney General George Brandis told Australia’s senate on Thursday, reading from a carefully drafted statement that was written following a conversation with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

Violence Against Jews on the Rise in Jerusalem

On Friday, a foiled suicide bomb attempt at the Tapuach Junction near the Samarian community of Ariel led to an area-wide manhunt for the terror cell behind the attack. It is believed that at least three other terrorists are involved. There is concern that additional attacks will be attempted since the group is thought to possess additional bomb belts and other weapons. The suspect aroused suspicion because he was wearing an unusually large coat in the heat. He was arrested when he refused to remove it. The arrest took place before any damage could be inflicted.
