May 29, 2014 Justin Timberlake, who performed in Tel Aviv on Jerusalem Day, managed to raise the ire of his Palestinian fans on Tuesday when he posted a photo of himself at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on social media, which he gave the hashtag #Israel and captioned—“What an experience. I will never forget this day.” Within two hours, the Instagram post had received close to 150,000 likes. The response was not all positive, however. One Instagram user responded, “There was never an Israel, this was always Palestine.”

Israel Extracts Drinking Water from Thin Air

April 30, 2014 The Israeli company Water-Gen has developed a machine called “GENius” that extracts drinking water from the air. The machine’s heat exchanger chills the air and condenses the resulting water vapor. Co-CEO Arye Kohavi said the machine also removes impurities. “The water is passed through an extensive water filtration system which cleans it from possible chemical and microbiological contaminations,” he said. Israeli Scientists Work to Cure Cancer

April 23, 2014 Israel continues to make advances in medicine that benefit people around the world. Recently, an Israeli researcher at the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine, who lost her mother to a brain tumor, discovered a genetically linked protein that is associated with the brain cancer glioblastoma, the most widespread form of brain cancer. As well, Professor Dan Peer of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Cell Research and Immunology, has proposed using a new nanoscale drug-delivery system to target specific cells in the fight against ovarian cancer, the number one cause of death for American women with cancer of the reproductive system.

Iran Could ‘Break Out’ by June

April 17, 2014 According to Washington, Iran could make nuclear bombs by June of this year, if it wanted to. "I think it's public knowledge today that we're operating with a time period for a so-called 'break-out' of about two months," United States Secretary of State John Kerry told the US Senate this past Tuesday. Kerry made the comments the day before Iran and the P5+1—Britain, France, China, Russia, Germany and the United States—concluded a two-day round of talks in Vienna.

The First of the Blood Moons Rise

April 17, 2014 On Monday night/ Tuesday morning, just after many in North America were finishing their first Passover Seder, here in Israel we were excited to watch the first lunar eclipse of the year being streamed live on the NASA website. This first eclipse of the year is not only remarkable because it coincided with the first night of Passover, it is significant because it is the first of four consecutive lunar eclipses that will coincide with the Jewish feasts of Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015. This series of four will occur at approximately six month intervals and is called a Tetrad. And because the moon turns red as it passes through the earth's shadow, some call the eclipse a Blood Moon.

Israeli Doctors Save Jordanian Boy

March 26, 2014 Last week, even as the Jordanian parliament was calling for the ousting of Israel’s envoy to Jordan (due to the self-defense killing of a Jordanian judge at the Allenby Bridge crossing), Israeli doctors at Haifa's Rambam Medical Center provided a 7-year-old Jordanian boy with his mother's donated kidney. After the boy faced critical kidney failure, his parents wrote a request to the Civil Administration Health Services for the operation to go forward at Rambam Medical Center.

Israelis to Pray for Rain at the Western Wall

March 10, 2014 Israel’s Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi David Lau has called for day of prayer for rain on this week’s upcoming Fast of Esther (Ta’anit Esther). Lau made the announcement during a meeting with the Chairman of the Agricultural Caucus in the Knesset (parliament), MK Zevulun Kalfa, at which time they discussed the drought and the Shemita agricultural Sabbath. “The Master of the World teaches us that the rain is ‘ours’ because it depends on the Jewish people and their prayers,” said Lau. The prayer rally for rain will be held on March 13 at the Western (Wailing) Wall and will end with Mincha (Afternoon Prayer).
