Palestinians Denounce Students’ Visit to Auschwitz

April 23, 2014 Palestinian Professor Mohammed S. Dajani Daoudi, the library director and a professor of American studies at Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem, recently took what is thought to be the first group of Palestinian students to Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, in Poland. “It helped emphasize the human story of the Holocaust, to study the meaning of the historical narrative as related to our conflict, to heighten empathy, awareness, and sensitivity,” said the professor who was once a Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) guerrilla.

Acharon Shel Pesach: A Feast for the Messiah

April 20, 2014 In Chasidic Judaism in the Diaspora (outside Israel), a final feast will begin tomorrow before sunset and continue until after nightfall. This final festival meal on the seventh day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread (eighth day of Passover) is called Seudat Moshiach (Feast of Messiah). It was initiated by the founder of the Chasidic movement, Rabbi Yisrael (Israel) ben Eliezer, also called Baal Shem Tov or Besht, a Jewish mystic (ca. 1700–1760). The traditional Feast of Messiah, held in anticipation of the future redemption by the Messiah, includes songs, matzah (unleavened bread), and the four cups of wine typical of the Passover Seder.

Divine Presence of God Felt During Priestly Blessings at the Wailing Wall

April 17, 2014 Early this morning, tens of thousands of Jewish people from here in Israel and around the world descended through the alley ways of the Old City of Jerusalem, walked down the ancient stairs and through tight security, before entering the open area which was quickly filling up before the Holiest place in Judaism – the Western (Wailing Wall). For the past couple of days the Cohanim (Jewish Priests) have been preparing themselves to enter into a state of holiness to give the special blessings to the people of Israel this morning. They were purified in the mikvah (water immersion pool) and then conducted other blessings of washing. This morning wearing their tallit (prayer shawls), they presided for God over the people in the Holiest Place accessible to the Jewish People today – the Western Wall.

Egyptian Coffin Unearthed in Israel

April 17, 2014 The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) recently unearthed a 3,300-year-old Late Bronze Age cylindrical Egyptian coffin in Israel. The IAA called the find, which features a rare human-shaped lid with a slender face and Egyptian-styled hands crossed over the form’s chest, "very appealing." "This is a really beautiful face, very serene," said Egyptologist and IAA archaeologist Edwin van den Brink, who was involved in the Jezreel Valley recovery.

Chinese Jews Celebrate First Community Passover Seder in 200 Years

The First of the Blood Moons Rise

April 17, 2014 On Monday night/ Tuesday morning, just after many in North America were finishing their first Passover Seder, here in Israel we were excited to watch the first lunar eclipse of the year being streamed live on the NASA website. This first eclipse of the year is not only remarkable because it coincided with the first night of Passover, it is significant because it is the first of four consecutive lunar eclipses that will coincide with the Jewish feasts of Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015. This series of four will occur at approximately six month intervals and is called a Tetrad. And because the moon turns red as it passes through the earth's shadow, some call the eclipse a Blood Moon.

Knesset Considers Jewish Prayer on Temple Mount

April 9, 2014 For the first time ever, a special Knesset subcommittee convened for an in-depth examination of the Jewish right to pray on the Temple Mount, Judaism's holiest site, which while under Israeli control has been administered by the Muslim Waqf. Although no Israeli law bans Jewish prayer, the Jordanian Waqf prohibits Jewish lips from moving in prayer on the Mount, maintaining strict enforcement. The Waqf's administrative role is aided by the presence of Islam's eagle-eyed faithful and the security role of Israeli police, who seemingly aim to diffuse explosive situations on Har haBeit (the Temple Mount) before there is a chance that they develop.
